ABU DHABI, 12th June, 2023 (WAM) — ADIHEX, in its commitment to preserve the historical symbolism and authentic heritage of falconry, has unveiled a new competition to select the “Best Integrated Set of Falconry Tools for Hunting Trips”. This initiative aims to support and encourage craftsmen, inventors, and companies specialising in the manufacturing of falconry tools and equipment. For falconers who wish to raise or train a falcon, acquiring a set of essential tools is crucial. These tools include the falcon hood, gauntlet, jess, leash, swivel, tracking device, traditional lure, and modern lure, all of which are neatly arranged in a suitable bag. Traditionally known as the “mikhla,” the falconry bag is an open-topped sack made of linen or hemp with a short strap to be placed over the shoulder. Some falconers choose to carry it securely under their armpit. Inside the bag, falconers keep their collection of falconry tools. Organised by the Emirates Falconers’ Club, ADIHEX will take place from 23rd to 29th August 2023 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC). The event is officially sponsored by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the International Fund for Houbara Conservation (IFHC), and ADNEC. Caracal International LLC serves as the sector partner, while the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey, the European Foundation for Falconry and Conservation, the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, Dubai International Horse Fair, The Game Fair France, and JAGD and HUND in Germany are the industry partners. ARB Emirates is the official automotive partner, and Mohamed bin Zayed Falconry and Desert Physiognomy School, along with the Arabian Saluki Centre in Abu Dhabi, are the visitor experience partners. The judging criteria established by the Emirates Falconers’ Club and the judging committee require participants to present a collection of traditional falconry tools and supplies. The quality of manufacturing, appropriate design of the bag or product for housing the falconry tools, overall aesthetic appearance, and adherence to traditional aesthetics will be taken into consideration. Additionally, the materials used in the manufacturing process and the affordability of the price will play significant roles. Participation is limited to manufacturers of handmade falconry tools. While falconry has been practiced for thousands of years, its tools and techniques have undergone minimal changes until recently. With the advancements in technology, there is now a growing interest in preserving the authentic heritage while incorporating sustainable modern approaches. This includes the reinvention of traditional tools using contemporary methods, the enhancement of training techniques for improved efficiency, and, most importantly, the reduction of risks and dangers for the falcons. Efforts are also being made to minimise injuries and illnesses among falcons, improve their treatment and facilitate their movement when tethered.
