The European Union Saturday welcomed the restoration of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, voicing hope relations will resume in two months.

In a statement, Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Peter Stano, said the 27-member bloc welcomed diplomatic efforts that led to this “important” step.

“Since Saudi Arabia and Iran are pivotal to the security of the region, the resumption of bilateral relations may contribute to the stability of the region as a whole.” he said in a statement.

Promoting peace and stability and de-escalating tensions in the broader Middle East are key priorities for the European Union, he said.

For its part, France also welcomed the announcement that Saudi-Iranian relations will be restored and embassies will open after relations were severed seven years ago.
