The Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) reviewed efforts exerted by the State to provide great care for the elderly over the past years.

This came in an Infograph published by the center on Wednesday, June 15, which marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

In January 2019, the Social Solidarity Ministry launched the “elderly companion” service that provides caregivers for elderly people.

In October 2020, elderly commuters above the age of 60 received a 50 percent discount on all transportation fees. The social solidarity and transport ministry also agreed to provide free public transportation for those over the age of 70.

In November 2021, the Health Ministry launched a program to provide healthcare for the elderly with the aim of improving the quality of life for citizens aged 65 years and above.

In December 2021, the Communications and Information Technology Ministry announced the possibility of having contracts for telephone and fixed internet services for users over 60 years old for free.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 66/127,December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006.

It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of our older generations.
