AMMAN: Jordan today slammed Israel’s attempt to politically assassinate UNRWA as part of a larger scheme to liquidate the Palestinian cause.
This came during a joint press conference with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
Safadi stressed that the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip is worsening as a result of the ongoing Israeli aggression, noting that the amount of humanitarian aid coming in does not meet the minimum needs and requirements of the Palestinians.
He affirmed Jordan’s commitment to supporting UNRWA, noting that the agency’s ability to do its duty to serve the population of Gaza remains very limited due to the occupation obstacles and restrictions imposed on the agency by the occupation forces.
He slammed Israel’s attempt to politically assassinate UNRWA as part of a larger scheme aimed at liquidating the Pal
estinian cause.
For his part, Lazzarini said that nearly 17,000 children in the Gaza Strip have lost their parents, while around 20,000 others remain missing.
He added that at least 190 UNRWA staff were killed as a result of the ongoing war, which inflicted damage on more than half of UNRWA’s facilities.
Lazzarini stressed that UNRWA in Gaza is facing flagrant and raging aggression, demanding to hold those responsible to account.
“We have enough to carry out our operations until the end of next August, however, the financial situation of the agency remains precarious.’
The UN official described what’s happening in the West Bank as a silent war unfolding in the shadows of the Gaza war.
