Pope Francis announced yesterday in St Peter’s Square during the Sunday Angelus the date for the new Consistory, 30 September, in which the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, will be created Cardinal. “I would like to announce that next 30 September I will hold a Consistory for the appointment of new Cardinals. Where they come from expresses the universality of the Church, which continues to proclaim the merciful love of God to all people of the earth,” said Pope Francis. Formerly Custos of the Holy Land and Guardian of Mount Zion from 2004 to 2016, Pizzaballah had been appointed, by Pope Francis, Apostolic Administrator on 24 June 2016 and then Patriarch of Jerusalem of the Latins on 24 October 2020. The friars of the Custody of the Holy Land extended their congratulations and best wishes to the newly elected Cardinal.
