Amman, The Ministry of Transport has begun a project to develop a mobile phone application that links passengers with the ministry with the aim of enhancing public transport.

During her participation on Wednesday evening in the meetings of the United Nations Economic and Social Committee (ESCWA) on “Addressing Barriers to Women’s Economic Participation in the Arab World,” Secretary-General of the ministry Wissam Tahtamoni said the project focuses on providing safe transportation for women to increase their participation in the labor market.

According to a ministry statement on Thursday, Tahtamoni stated that the percentage of education among Jordanian women is high, however, their participation in the labor market is far less in comparison, citing a number of reasons, including the lack of safe transportation and high costs of transportation.

Among other projects to ensure women’s economic participation were a project to rehabilitate bus stops by installing more lights and CCTV cameras, in addition to the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, subsidizing public transport, putting a cap on transportation fares, and amending legislation to protect women, and encouraging their work in the transport sector.
