The rampage and vandalism by Israeli settlers in the Palestinian town of Burqa in the north of the occupied West Bank were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today. Al-Ayyam daily said the settlers’ rampage and destruction of vehicles in Burqa were done under the protection of Israeli soldiers. Al-Quds daily said dozens of people were injured in the settlers’ attack on Burqa, while the third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, said Burqa residents confronted the settlers and soldiers. The rise in attacks against Burqa came after the government-endorsed return of settlers to the nearby settlement of Homesh, evacuated in 2005. Al-Quds also said that the Israeli occupation authorities are planning to allow settlers to return to other evacuated settlements in the north of the West Bank after canceling the 2005 Disengagement Law that led to the evacuation of four settlements near Jenin, in addition to the settlements in the Gaza Strip. The three dailies also reported on Israeli plans to seize thousands of dunums of Palestinian lands in the Salfit governorate and in al-Khader, near Bethlehem, to build new settlements. The dailies also reported on developments related to the attack and killing of three Israeli soldiers by an Egyptian soldier at the Israeli-Egyptian borders on Saturday. Al-Ayyam said new information revealed that the Israeli soldiers killed in the attack did not shoot and that Egypt is demanding the return of the body of its soldier. Al-Quds said Israel believes the Egyptian soldier acted alone. In other news, al-Ayyam said Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh may return to Gaza, which he left in 2019 after becoming the top man in the Islamic movement, and that no ‘dramatic’ results are expected from the visit by a Hamas delegation to Cairo. Al-Quds said a European diplomatic delegation visited the Gaza Strip to see firsthand the impact of the latest Israeli military onslaught on the besieged sea enclave. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the popular committee in the Arab town of Taybe, in central Israel, called for participation in the activities held in a tent to protest the shortage of land to build on and housing.
