Polish Ambassador to Lebanon, Przemyslaw Niesiolowski, Consul Anita Ananic, and Deputy Head of Mission Mateusz Ananic, visited today the municipality of Menjez and the Polish archaeological mission operating in it for the past month, where archaeologists from the Polish Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Dr. Susanna Wigginska, in cooperation with the General Directorate of Antiquities and the Municipality of Menjez, have been studying the mysterious prehistoric culture of the megalithic tombs present in Akkar, mainly in the border town of Menjez, directly at the Lebanese bank of the Grand River. This project is implemented in cooperation with archaeologists from the University of Geneva under the supervision of Dr. Tara Steimer. The Polish delegation also visited the “Heritage House and the Municipal Museum of Menjez”, where copies of the megalithic tombs’ discoveries, documents, maps, and short films were displayed. They also visited the Temple of Nemesis (Beit Ja’lok), known as the shrine of the Lord. Later, the delegation walked along the Menjez trail which was implemented by the municipality in cooperation with the Association of Forestry in Lebanon and the Lebanese Mountain Trail Association, to discover all the archaeological, heritage, cultural and natural features of the town, which the municipality of Menjez strived to register on the preliminary list of the UNESCO World Heritage. A meeting was held with the mayor of Menjez, George Youssef, who briefed them on the cooperation between archaeologists, the municipality of Menjez, and the local community. He also gave a detailed explanation of the projects carried out by the municipality to develop the area, including archaeological activities. The Polish ambassador discussed with the mayor the possibilities of cooperation for the development of the town of Menjez and agreed to hold follow up meetings in Beirut, starting next week.
