NEW YORK: The United Nations today appointed the outgoing Dutch Minister Sigrid Kaag as the coordinator for humanitarian affairs in the Gaza Strip, following a UN Security Council resolution calling for immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

“United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today announced the appointment of Ms Sigrid Kaag of the Netherlands as Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza,” the UN said in a statement.

The Dutch minister will be responsible for facilitating, coordinating, monitoring and verifying humanitarian relief consignments for Gaza, as well as establishing a mechanism to hasten aid into the Gaza Strip through countries not involved with the conflict.
