The Ministry of Environment has organized the 2nd edition of an annual environmental marathon which is hosted by Alexandria for the second consecutive year under the theme: “To combat climate change,” as part of Egypt’s preparations for hosting the upcoming global climate summit, COP27, in November.

This year’s edition aims to raise young people’s awareness about the negative effects of climate change, and muster youth power to play an active role regarding this critical issue, Minister of Environment Yassmine Foaud said in a statement on Saturday 30/07/2022.

Organized in cooperation with Alexandria Security Directorate, the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, and the Egyptian Ambulance Organization, the marathon saw the participation of nearly 500 young people from various age groups.

The marathon’s 10km course extended from the Citadel of Qaitbay to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

The Citadel of Qaitbay, a medieval fortress built on the ruins of the Alexandria lighthouse at the end of a narrow peninsula jutting into the sea, had been threatened by rising sea levels until the Egyptian General Authority for Shores Protection embarked on some massive projects to protect it against the adverse impacts of climate change.
