Abu Dhabi: Al Ahli beat Emirates 2-1 away to extend their sole leadership of the Arabian Gulf League to nine points on Thursday, while Al Jazira squandered a 2-0 lead to settle for a draw with Al Dhafra.
Goals from Grafite in the 34th minute and Esmail Al Hammadi in the 64th helped the Al Ahli take a 2-0 lead, while the home team’s consolation goal was scored by Herriera from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
Luis Jimenez, the Al Ahli midfielder, was sent off in the 80th minute for two bookings.
Al Ahli thus moved on to 42 points, nine more than Al Shabab, who host Al Shaab today, while Emirates remain on 16 points.
In Abu Dhabi, Al Jazira squandered a two-goal lead to share the spoils with Al Dhafra.
Abdul Aziz Barrada overcame his sorrow after his grandmother died four days ago and played a major role in his team’s two goals.
He created the first from a free-kick to defender Abdulla Moussa, who headed home in the fourth minute.
Then the Moroccan midfielder himself scored the second from another free-kick in the 18th minute.
Makhete Diop scored the visitors’ first goal in the 40th minute from the spot.
Barrada wasthe sent off in the 53rd minute for collecting two yellow cards. The Al Dhafra players took advantage of the reduction in numbers and Rogerio levelled the scores one-minute after the sending-off.
Al Jazira now have 33 points while Al Dhafra boast 26.
