Dubai: Al Dhafra and Bani Yas played out a goalless draw as bottom side Al Shaab stunned fancied Al Nasr 2-0 in the early matches of the 15th round of the Arabian Gulf League on Friday.
The result in the far-off corner of Abu Dhabi saw Al Dhafra continue in sixth place with 23 points, while Bani Yas are ninth with 21. Al Shaab’s shock win took the Sharjah club out of the relegation zone and into 12th with ten points, while Al Nasr stay in fifth.
The Al Dhafra-Bani Yas match was evenly balanced, with former national team star Nawaf Mubarak proving to be a thorn in the Al Dhafra defence.
Abdullah Sultan saved a long-ranger from Mubarak in the sixth minute and was again denied him in the 65th, when the goalkeeper parried a scorcher away for a corner.
Mubarak was again in the thick of action towards the end of the second half, but once again Sultan ensured the scorecard remained blank with a diving save.
The hosts also had their share of chances, with the best coming soon before half-time. First Makhete Diop headed a Bandar Mohammad cross wide and then Kamel Chafni was denied by Bani Yas’ young goalkeeper Sultan Mussabah.
Meanwhile, Al Shaab got the vital three points thanks to a 38th-minute goal from Badr Al Noobi and a beauty from French striker Michael Laurent Ndri in the 78th.
