Dubai: Maher Jassim’s late winner gave Al Wasl a shock 2-1 victory over Al Ahli at Zabeel Stadium on Saturday, handing the Arabian Gulf League leaders their first league defeat of the season.
Jassim tapped in the deflection from Abdullah Kazim’s follow-up shot after Wahid Esmail’s free kick was punched clear by Al Ahli goalkeeper Saif Yousuf.
Jociel Ferreira Da Silva put Al Ahli ahead before the interval after burying Basheer Saeed’s forward pass into the bottom corner. But Al Wasl equalised after the hour when Andre Senghor headed home a corner from Abdullah Kazim.
Al Ahli have now seen their four point lead at the top of the table reduced to one point, after second-placed Al Shabab maintained their pressure on Al Ahli with a 2-0 win at home to Al Nasr on Saturday.
The shock defeat came at the end of a bad day for Cosmin Olaroiu, who has also been slapped with a six month touchline ban and a Dh100,000 fine for breaching a contract with his former club Al Ain to join Al Ahli in June.
Meanwhile, under new coach Hector Cuper, Al Wasl have now recorded three wins, a draw and a loss in five league and President Cup matches, recovering well from last week’s 6-1 defeat at the hands of derby rivals Al Nasr.
In Sunday’s other matches Al Ain beat Al Shaab 5-2 at home and Bani Yas fell to a 1-0 defeat away to Sharjah.
