AMBASSADOR LASSEN INAUGURATES EUFUNDED WATER, WASTE, ENERGY AND AGRICULTURAL INFRASTRUCTURES IN TAANAYEL

Ambassador Christina Lassen, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon, inaugurated today EU-funded facilities in Taanayel in the Beqaa. The facilities have been built and equipped to enhance basic infrastructure and economic recovery in Lebanon by the organisation Arcenciel.

The newly inaugurated facilities include the construction of water supply networks and storage for irrigation and for drinking water; waste water treatment that can be re-used for irrigation; the rehabilitation of irrigation channels; the installation of 316 solar panels for electricity production and water pumping; the production of heating bricks with recycled pruning wastes; and the equipment of post-harvesting infrastructures to preserve 1600 tons of agricultural products per season. New equipment for the treatment of medical waste were also supplied under this EU project.

The project, funded by the EU with Euros 2.5 million, is part of a broader programme of Euros 18 million aimed at improving the infrastructures and the local economy in the areas in the Beqaa that are most affected by the Syrian refugee crisis. By improving the water, sanitation, solid waste and energy infrastructures, as well as strengthening the local agro-food economy, the project allows host communities and Syrian refugees in the Beqaa to have better access to basic resources and services.

Ambassador Lassen said: "Considering the magnitude of the repercussion of the Syrian crisis on Lebanon, and with it the increasing need for basic services like water and electricity, the European Union has supported the improvement of the water supply, irrigation and treatment of waste water many places here in the Bekaa including through this EU-funded project implemented by Arcenciel. This project will benefit all the people in the area, Lebanese as well as refugees". -- Press release
