Aoun at International Lions Club Conference: Syrian Refugee crisis most difficult challenge

President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, on Friday stressed that sustainable development was the basis for solving "the problems of the present and meeting its needs -- with practical preparation for future requirements."

The President's words came during his sponsorship of the opening session of the 22nd Mediterranean Conference of the International Lions Club, which was held earlier on Friday at the Hilton Habtoor Hotel - Sin El Fil.

"The most difficult challenge imposed by regional wars on Lebanon remains the Syrian refugee crisis; this has become a problem that exceeds Lebanon's tolerance," Aoun said, pointing to the environmental damage incurred by this calamity due to the lack of infrastructure that's sufficient enough to accommodate 1.5 million refugees.

"What worries us the most is that the international community is still determined to link the return of refugees with a political solution in Syria, which means that it's been deferring the return to an unknown time," he added.

Aoun asked of the International Lions Club members to relay Lebanon's sufferings, as well as well as those of refugees, to the world so as to be encouraged to help them go back home as soon as possible.
