President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, confirmed to his Baabda Palace guests on Monday that Lebanon is trying to get out of difficulties one at a time; noting that despite accumulating crises, the country has taken giant steps forward since the election of a president.
Speaking to an American delegation from Task Force for Lebanon headed by Ambassador Edward Gabriel, Aoun said that the national consensus brought about by presidential elections provided an ideal medium for stability. However, issues pending solution, such as influx of Syrian refugees, combating terrorism, establishing security along the Lebanese-Syrian border, and halting Israeli violations in the south and fully applying UN resolution 1701 remained a top priority.
Aoun highlighted the successful security missions carried out by the Lebanese Armed Forces and other security forces. At the same time, he welcomed assistance to Lebanese security institutions, particularly from the United States.
"The project law being drafted by the Congress to put new financial sanctions on certain Lebanese parties, institutions and individuals will harm Lebanon and its people greatly," the President pointed out in answer to a question, adding that such a law was not in harmony with Lebanese-US relations, which Lebanon was keen on bolstering in various fields.
"Lebanon is carrying out necessary contacts to stop this law from being decreed, and welcomes any effort by the Task Force for Lebanon in this domain."
In turn, Ambassador Gabriel highlighted the Task Force's appreciation for Aoun's stances and leading role in establishing national unity and domestic stability. He placed at the President's disposal all the capabilities of his group in aiding with essential matters, especially ones pertaining to Lebanese-American ties.
Gabriel wished upon Aoun to visit the United States and clarify to US officials the reality of Lebanese stances from current events.
Separately, Aoun met with Ambassador of Spain, Milagros Hernando Echevarr?a, on a farewell visit at the end of her diplomatic mission in Lebanon.
The President also convened with a delegation from the union of touristic establishments.
