Abu Dhabi: Al Ahli continued their sole leadership of the Arabian Gulf League beating Bani Yas, 3-2 in a thriller on Wednesday night while Sharjah kept on their winning streak and defeated Al Wahda 2-1.
Al Ahli took the lead as early as the first minute when Hugo Viana scored their first goal with a spectacular long range shot from 25 metres.
The early goal made the home team panic and Ahli took command and could have went ahead further but their top scorer Grafite missed a sitter in the 7th minute following a penetrating pass form Luis Jiminez.
Bani Yas players started coming back to the game and pressed forward to level the score which they did in the 25th minute when Nawaf Mubarak sent a ball behind the defenders to his captain Yousuf Jaber, the left fullback, who headed home the equalizer but Grafite has the last laugh in the first half as he put Al Ahli again into the lead in the last minute before the breather.
Bani Yas started the second half attacking fiercely and they equalized when Marcelo shot a rebound from the visiting defenders in the 67th minute but their jubilation was short lived as Grafite came again to the rescue of his team netting the winner in the 72nd minute to collect full 18 points from 6 matches while Bani Yas remained with 8.
In Sharjah, the city team emerged winners against Al Wahda with goals from Ramos and Ahmad Khamis while Damian Diaz scored the consolation goal for the guests.
Shajah jumped to second place with 12 points while Al Wahda remained with 8 points.
