Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Tuesday that her country is seeking to acquire nuclear-powered submarines to ensure “better strategic balance of power.” Wong, quoted by the Asia News Network, said Australia is seeking to acquire such “potentials for helping in preserving peace” in the region, affirming that her country would re-assure other nations in the region that it has no plans to have nuclear arms. She affirmed that Canberra would maintain the relations with China, the number-one commercial partner for the nation. Australia, according to an agreement worked out with the United Kingdom and the US in 2021, would acquire nuclear-powered submarines, amid concerns by some regional countries that the move might deepen tension in the region.
