Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed El Tayyeb said Sunday Spain had been the incubator of Islamic civilization in Europe for more than seven centuries.
Many renowned interpreters, hadith scholars and figures of Islamic Sufism were born in Spain, he added during his meeting with Spanish Ambassador in Cairo Alvaro Iranzo Gutiérrez.
Azhar welcomes cooperation with Spain and supports its efforts to promote dialogue between cultures, the Grand Imam said.
It is also ready to support the Muslims in Spain by providing scholarships at Al-Azhar University and Al-Azhar institutes for pre-university education, to be ambassadors of Islam in Europe and contribute to spreading moderation there, he added.
For his part, the Spanish ambassador expressed his appreciation for the role of Al Azhar in combating extremism and presenting moderate Islam to the world.
