House Speaker Nabih Berri was elected Sunday as Secretary of the 29th Conference of the Inter-Arab Parliamentary Union, which opened its works in Amman today under the headline, "Jerusalem as an eternal capital of the State of Palestine".
Speaking at the opening session, President of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, Ali Abdel-Al, emphasized that "Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Palestine," condemning the American decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
He added that "the only issue on the agreed upon agenda is the issue of Jerusalem," stressing "solidarity and activating the decisions of the Union."
For his part, and speaking on behalf of Jordan's Crown Prince Abdullah, Jordanian Parliament Speaker Atef Al-Tarawneh underlined "the shared responsibility to face the challenges of the region, shedding special light on Syria."
He also welcomed the Syrian delegation participating in the conference, saying: "There is a need to make a step to reach a political solution in Syria to regain its role as it represents the cornerstone of the region."
