Muscat: American Daniel Im jumped two places up with a consistent game in better conditions on Friday to go top of the leaderboard with six-under par,as two golfers set the course record with a score of 66 in the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic at the Almouj Course in Muscat. However, it was 14th ranked Italian Marco Crespi who impressed with five birdies and an eagle on the third to take second position at five under par with the second-round total of 139 after the second round of 67. Two others — Finn Roope Kakko and South African Brandon Stone — were on 139 with Crespi.
Guillaume Cambis of France and Spaniard Carlos del Moral created the course history with the score of 66 on the second day, the best at the Almouj Golf Course at the Wave.
Cambis was the only other golfer to hit eagle to climb 50 places on the leaderboard at the end of the second round. His score of 66 was the best on a pleasant but sunny day as he finished with 140.
Del Moral, ranked 123, also hit 66 on the day two at the 7,310 yards Greg Norman designed course by the sea and strengthened his chances of joining 45 going to Dubai for the year-ending tournament.
Overnight leader Julien Guerrier of France carded three bogeys before hitting birdies on 15th and 17th respectively. However, his bad day continued when he bogeyed again on his last at the 18th to finish second round two over.
Three golfers trail by a stroke to leader Daniel is while three others are two points adrift to the second day leader.
“We have had two great days of golf so far although the weather seems to have been unseasonally warm this week with a strong wind day one on Thursday and was a little kinder yesterday [Friday],” said Nick Tarratt, Director European Tour International – Dubai Office.
“The course has been impressively prepared by Steve Johnson, Golf Course Superintendent and his agronomy team, they should all be congratulated.
The scoring by the leading players over the first two rounds has been exceptional with two 66’s on Friday establishing a new course record from Cambis and del Moral,” he added.
The drama is two-fold now the cut is established to the top 60 players with the leading 45 players on the Rankings after Oman event gaining places to next week’s Dubai Festival City Challenge Tour Grand Final hosted by Al Badia Golf Club with the top 15 players from the Challenge Tour Rankings after the Grand Final gaining their playing privileges on the 2014 European Tour.
