Delhi High Court blocks release of ‘Gulaab Gang’

The Delhi High Court Wednesday stayed the release of forthcoming Hindi movie Gulaab Gang, reportedly based on the life of activist Sampat Pal, who formed Gulabi Gang, a group of pink sari-clad women vigilantes in Uttar Pradesh in north India.

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva stayed the release of the film, starring Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, saying that if it is allowed to be released it will cause irreparable damage to the reputation of Pal. The film was set for release March 7 in India and on March 6 in the UAE.

Local distributors said that the film would release in the UAE as planned on Thursday, unless a notification comes from India.

Pal moved the high court seeking a restraining order on the release of the film, saying the filmmakers did not take her permission before making the movie, which, she alleges, shows her in bad light.

“Reputation once lost is lost forever and can not come back and even can’t be compensated with monetary terms,” the court said.

The movie is directed by debutant Soumik Sen and produced by Anubhav Sinha.
