Dubai: Dr Jaime Duarte is a physician by profession, but the Houston-based doctor has taken the week off work to be part of the excitement at the Nad Al Sheba Sporting Clays Championship that entered its penultimate day on Tuesday.
Duarte was introduced to the sport after his first cousin Diego Duarte represented Colombia at two successive Olympic Games, Athens in 2004 and four years later in Beijing.
“Since then shooting has been a hobby that makes me switch off work and think about bigger things. My weekends are meant for shooting and, whenever I think I can get away from work, I will be on a shooting range,” Duarte told Gulf News.
After graduating from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Dr Duarte obtained his post-graduate medical training in Houston, Texas under the Memorial Family Practice residency programme. And since receiving his medical degree, the Colombian has been dealing with patients with complex medical conditions including diabetes, hypertension and depression.
“Things can be quite stressful at work at times and shooting for me is a great stress reliever,” he said after shooting 17 and 20 for a total of 37 over the two days of competition.
“One needs a mind of steel to be at the top. It’s been tough going for me, but I cannot complain as shooting is just a hobby for me,” he said.
“I am amazed with Dubai. It looks like this place is taken out a movie,” he added.
