Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said the ambitious economic reform program adopted by Egypt since 2016, has helped the country avoid the worst repercussions of the current global economy’s challenges.

The minister made the remarks on Thursday 19/5/2022 during his participation in the virtual meeting of the BRICS-plus dialogue with foreign ministers from emerging market nations upon an invitation from his Chinese counterpart.

Egypt managed to achieve positive growth rates in 2020 amid the peak of the coronavirus pandemic, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Hafez quoted Shoukry as saying during the meeting.

Egypt proceeds with its concrete steps to mitigate the repercussions of the various global challenges, Shoukry said, highlighting the implementation of the effective social insurance programs including Takaful and Karama and Hayah Karima initiatives.

Egypt is determined to continue efforts to achieve sustainable economic development and growth as well as to play a leading role in promoting the developing countries’ interests at the international level and boosting South-South cooperation, he said.

The foreign minister affirmed the deep-rooted and close relations binding Egypt and the BRICS member states.

Shoukry shed light on Egypt’s hosting of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 27) in November, saying that Egypt will exert all the necessary efforts to deliver the voice of the developing countries and ensure that the conference will come up with balanced results that take into consideration the priorities of the developing countries.
