Economic Summit Organizing Committee: Inviting Syria linked to Arab League, Berri did agree on inviting Libya diplomatically

The Organizing Committee of the Arab Summit for Economic and Social Development issued on Friday the following statement:

"Commenting on some of the points raised on the invitations to the Arab Summit for economic and social development, the committee is interested in clarifying the following:

Firstly: Preparations for the summit began last August, in coordination between the various State departments.

Secondly: Chairman of the Supreme Committee organizing the summit, Dr. Antoine Choucair, and Chairman of the Executive Committee, Dr. Nabil Chedid, have visited both Speaker Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, as well as the concerned ministers, and informed them on all the measures adopted in terms of organizing the summit, the participating countries and the topics to be put on the agenda, as well as the budget set for the summit and other topics. There was an agreement on the raised points, and we subsequently issued the decrees of the Summit.

Thirdly: With regards to Libya's invitation to attend the summit, Speaker Berri has informed members of the Supreme Committee that he agreed on inviting Libya, provided that the invitation be addressed through diplomatic channels. This was done by Libya's delegate to the League of Arab States. As for the invitation of Syria, the committee members explained to Speaker Berri that this issue is related to the decision of the Council of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers, and is not a Lebanese decision.

Fourthly: It should be noted that during the Arab summit held in Beirut back in 2002, Libya participated with a high-level delegation."
