Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry praised Turkey’s decision of banning the Egyptian fugitives of the outlawed group Brotherhood from using social media, describing it as “a positive step.”
In a phone call with the Egyptian talk show “Cairo and Al-Nas” on Al-Qahira we Al Nas satellite channel on Saturday, Shoukryry indicated “the policy that Turkey will take with Egypt is consistent with the rules of international law.”
The continuation of these policies means normalizing relations between the two countries, he added.
Al-Arabiya network reported that fugitive Ibrahim Mounir, the acting general guide of the Brotherhood, decided to dissolve the Muslim Brotherhood’s administrative office in Turkey, and to dissolve the Shura Council, besides postponing the group’s elections- due in July -for 6 months.
Turkey had announced last March its desire to resume diplomatic contacts with Egypt.
After being internationally isolated due to his foreign policy, Turkey started courting Cairo. Spokesman of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan Ibrahim Kalin told Bloomberg that his country is ready to normalize ties with Egypt and some Gulf States.
Turkish-Egyptian ties have strained since 2013 when Erdogan criticized the Jaune 30 Revolution that thwarted the ruling of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group. Also, Turkey’s relations with some Gulf countries strained due to its support to terrorists and interference into other neighboring countries’ affairs like Libya and Syria.
