Minister of State for Displaced Affairs Saleh Al-Gharib welcomed this Tuesday the Russian Ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, Danish Ambassador Merit Joel and a delegation of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In the wake of the meeting, Zasypkin said "We met to discuss the issue of displaced Syrians, and we realized that there are common points that we can build upon. We agreed on joint action and I believe that conditions will develop for the best in all fields."
Stressing the need for a unified vision, the ambassador reiterated "that the return of the displaced must not be linked to a political solution. We must secure the widest participation of members of the international community."
Asked about the Russian talks with UNHCR, he said: "I do not think we should talk about the points of contention. The criteria for the return of displaced people are known."
"The Lebanese demands as to the work of the Commission should be taken into account," he added.
Minister Gharib, in turn, said "We discussed the file of displaced persons. There is a similarity in the views on how to approach this file in terms of not linking the return of displaced people to the political solution and stressing the safe and sound return. We welcomed the Russian initiative and we are ready to cooperate more in this file."
