Greta Gerwig, the star of Frances Ha and a host of other leftfield film comedies, is to star in and potentially co-write the mainstream sitcom How I Met Your Father, a spinoff of the successful and long-running How I Met Your Mother. She will also have a producer role.
The show is currently only at pilot stage, but given the success of the original show and with Mother’s writer-producers Carter Bays and Craig Thomas on board, the prospects for a full series seems good.
How I Met Your Mother centres around the concept of a father in 2030 telling his children in increasingly intricate detail over the course of nine seasons and nearly 200 episodes how he met their mother in the present day. Starring Josh Radnor in the central role, and co-starring the fairly starry likes of Jason Segal, Alyson Hannigan, Colbie Smuthers and Neil Patrick Harris, it is among the most popular sitcoms in the US. Its final series is currently screening in the US.
The spinoff will start with a completely new cast and storyline, centring around Gerwig’s Sally, who lacks direction and is stuck in an unsuitable marriage after only a year.
Meanwhile, How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan has joined the cast of More Time With Family, a TV sitcom by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
Hannigan, best known for playing Lily Aldrin, will feature in the show alongside actor Tom Papa, reports variety.com.
More Time With Family follows the story of a man who ditches his career to spend more time with his family.
