Health Ministry: No Omicron cases detected in Egypt

No infections with Omicron have been detected in Egypt so far, the spokesman for the Health Ministry assured Monday.

Any infections with the new variant of Covid-19 would be clearly announced, Dr Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said in statements to Egypt’s Channel One.

He added that all measures are taken to reduce possibilities for this variant to enter the country or, if it does, to quickly detect it.

The Health Ministry is working in three directions to deal with Omicron: scientific research, precautionary measures and vaccination, the spokesman said.

He defended the health minister’s decision to start vaccinating children aging between 12 and 15 years old, saying that Covid-19 affects children as it does adults.

Indeed, immunity against the disease is higher among children than adults, but that does not mean it does not affect them, the spokesman reasoned.

Vaccinating children would sure curb the spread of Covid-19 infections, he noted.

Children registration for Pfizer shots should start Tuesday morning, the spokesman said.
