Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal late on Friday called the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin an “important step towards justice.”

Hailing the decision of the ICC to issue the warrant against Putin and Russia’s Children Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova, Shmyhal said: “Putin is responsible for this and other crimes of aggression. The head of the terrorist state must appear in court and be held accountable for all crimes against Ukraine.”

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said in a statement on his Twitter account that they appreciated the decision of the ICC and said: “International criminals will be held responsible for kidnapping children and other international crimes.”

Earlier on Friday, ICC issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president over alleged war crimes in Ukraine.
