Iranian DM Underlines Expansion of Military, Defense Cooperation with Iraq

TEHRAN Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami in a phone conversation with his Iraqi counterpart Najah Hassan Ali al-Shammari on Thursday called for the further development of military and defense cooperation between the two neighbors.

During the phone conversation, General Hatami referred to the growing friendly ties between Iran and Iraq in the past years, saying that Tehran has always put the security of Iraq among its main priorities.

We consider the security, stability and development of Iraq good for the region and we always defend this idea, he said.

General Hatami called for deepening of the defense and military relations between the two countries to strengthen their power in the region.

He referred to the Iraqi forces' efforts in fighting terrorists in the past years, and said the Iraqi people should be proud of their armed forces because history will always remember their bravery and endeavors.

General Hatami also invited his Iraqi counterpart to visit Tehran to further explore the ways for boosting ties in the military sphere.

Al-Shammari, for his part, expressed gratitude to Iran's help and support in fighting terrorist groups, and called for boosting all-out relations in different defensive sectors.

Iraq and Iran share many common interests, and their security and stability are intertwined, he added.

Al-Shammari had also in a meeting with Iran's military attache to the Arab country Brigadier General Mostafa Moradian late last month voiced Baghdad's eagerness to deepen military cooperation with Tehran.

At the meeting which was held at Iranian Embassy in Baghdad, al-Shammari said that deep defense-military cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad was of great importance.

He acknowledged Iran's role in helping Iraq campaign against the ISIL terrorist group over the past several years.

The two neighboring countries will stand by each other as two friendly countries, al-Shammari said.

Emphasizing the necessity of strengthening the Quadrilateral Baghdad Intelligence Sharing Center formed by Iran, Russia, Iraq and Syria, the Iraqi defense minister praised the active role of the center in fight against the ISIL.

Moradian, for his part, conveyed the congratulation of General Hatami to his Iraqi counterpart on his appointment as the new Iraqi defense minister.

He emphasized that Tehran is fully prepared to develop its defense-military ties with Baghdad.
