Amman Mayor Yousef Shawarbeh has taken part in the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development (AFSD) “Solutions and Action”, which is currently being held in the Lebanese capital, Beirut. Shawarbeh met with the Lebanese Minister of the Interior and Municipalities, Bassam Mawlawi, to talk about ways to improve municipal cooperation. He also presented Amman’s national experience in the areas of infrastructure, organization, transportation, traffic, and the environment, as well as the municipality’s strategy for the years 2022-2026. The mayor of Amman met with Beirut’s governor, Marwan Abboud, and the city’s mayor, Jamal Itani, where he praised the longstanding and strong ties between Jordan and Lebanon and emphasized the importance of bolstering cooperation and technical support as well as exchanging expertise in municipal affairs and crisis management. During a meeting with Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Rola Dashti, Shawarbeh affirmed the close cooperation with UN bodies and agencies, including the ESCWA and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UNEducational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in development projects to address the challenges of climate change, migration, asylum and sustainable development. He also emphasized the importance bolstering collaboration with the ESCWA in the urban development area, and supporting the urban observatory in the Greater Amman Municipality. The forum is the primary regional mechanism for the follow-up and review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab region. The AFSD brings together Arab governments and a wide range of stakeholders to discuss progress, review national and regional experiences, and consider the latest developments and implementation mechanisms of the 2030 Agenda at the national and regional levels. The AFSD report is formally delivered to the global High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), held annually in New York.
