Jumblatt: Who will provide safe return for Syrians?

Head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Walid Jumblatt, said Monday that "the repatriation of the Syrian refugees will not take place as long as the Syrian regime refuses their return."

"Who will provide a safe return for them?" he wondered.

"We support the Russian initiative but there must be guarantees," he added.

Jumblatt's remarks came on the sidelines of a conference on the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, organized the PSP, at Radisson Blu Hotel, Verdun.

The event was attended by Social Affairs Minister Richard Kouyoumjian, Education Minister Akram Shehayeb, Industry Minister Wael Abu Faour, and a panel of Arab and foreign ambassadors, in addition to UNHCR Representative Mireille Girard.

In his word, Kouyoumjian said that the conditions of the refugee's return were present in Syria and not in Lebanon.

"The best circumstances in Syria means the best conditions of return, and they are neither within the hands of the Lebanese government, nor the UN, nor the European Union; but within the hands of the Syrian regime which does not want this return," he explained.

For her part, Girard considered that the PSP conference was important and timely, saying that the situation in Lebanon is still fragile.

She added that Brussels conference proved that the international community would not give up on the host communities, stressing that donors will continue to help alleviate the burden caused by refugees.
