NEW YORK, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for a political settlement of the Syria crisis, saying there is no military solution, Xinhua news agency reported.
"The UN thinks there is no military solution to the Syria crisis, the solution is political. We are committed to find a political solution in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 which provides a roadmap for a political settlement," he told reporters.
Guterres called for the formation of a constitutional committee as agreed by the Syrian government and rebel groups earlier this year in Sochi, Russia, as an important tool for a future political solution.
"That is our commitment. That is our objective. Only a political solution can guarantee the future, the reconstruction, and a democratic and non-sectarian character of Syria.
