Dubai: SNF Maher, a course and distance winner for trainer Julio Permingo last season, looks the one to beat in the feature race of the afternoon at the Sharjah Equestrian & Racing Club’s second meeting of the season on Saturday.
A maximum field of 16 have been declared for the 1,700m handicap, which like the rest of the races on the card, is sponsored by the Sharjah International Book Fair.
Champion Trainer Ernst Oertel also looks to have a leading chance with Kalahari Desert who, however, has to concede weight to 14 rivals, with the exception of SNF Maher.
O’Shea, who takes the ride said: “He has yet to win on dirt but ran well enough when second here on three occasions so conditions should be fine. Hopefully he can go close.”
In form jockey Wayne Smith rides SNF Maher and said of his chances: “He likes it around Sharjah, which is obviously a bonus. He won his first two starts last season so is proven fresh and he should not be far away.”
Earlier in the afternoon, Oertel and O’Shea team-up with Zman Al Ajayib in a strong-looking conditions event over 1,700m.
The only Thoroughbred race on the day is a 1,700m handicap which has attracted nine runners headed by Doug Watson’s course and distance winner Storm Belt.
Satish Seemar is represented by Meydan scorer Skycruiser.
