Patriarchs meet in Bkirki to discuss private retreat with Pope Francis

The Bkirki Patriarchal Edifice witnessed this Thursday a meeting between Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi and the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Aram I, the Patriarch of Syriac Catholics, Mar Ignatius Joseph III Yonan, and the Patriarch of Syriac Orthodox Mar Ignatius Aphrem II, who will be participating in Pope Francis' call for prayer in the Italian city of Bari for the sake of peace and the cessation of wars and violence in the Middle East.

The meeting also touched on the issues to be discussed at the private retreat with the Pope, mainly "working for the consolidation of a just and lasting peace in the region, ending the wars immediately and returning all displaced persons, refugees and kidnapped people to their countries with dignity so that they can restore their role and preserve their cultures in their homelands."

Conferees stressed on the importance of "constructive and active Christian presence in the countries of the Middle East, on the basis of citizenship and equality, which dates more than two thousand years back.
