Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rahi refused on Sunday any institutional vacuum or extension of Parliament's mandate, in case political parties couldn't endorse a new voting system before June 20.
"With respect to the exerted efforts regarding the electoral law, I fear that politicians won't be able to adopt a new vote law; thus, reaching vacuum or Parliament extension which I totally refuse and condemn," Cardinal Rahi stated during Sunday's Mass on the occasion of renewing the consecration of Lebanon to the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Bkirki.
Rahi criticized Lebanese politicians for remaining idle towards the presence of more than two million Syrian refugees in the country, which equals half of the Lebanese population.
The cardinal also expressed his regrets over the deteriorating economic, social and security conditions in the country, saying "it has become open to all kinds of killings, thefts and assaults."
