Russia called on the Security Council on Friday to exert pressure on Ukraine to guarantee freedom of maritime navigation, noting that the latter rejects Russian proposals to open sea humanitarian corridors.

TASS news agency quoted Russian deputy Ambassador to the UN, Dmitry Chumakov, as saying on Friday that the “Arria formula” session focused on conflict and hunger, in reference allegations by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and a Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell about Russia blocking the flow of Ukrainian wheat exports to Africa.

He added that Ukraine did not agree to Russia’s proposals for sea humanitarian corridors, pointing out that the Ukrainian delegation to the International Maritime Organization recognized the danger of shelling and maritime mines from Ukraine.

Chumakov said that banning Russian ships in European ports does not help solve today’s problems, stressing the need to take all measures to ensure commercial navigation in the Black and Azov seas and the Mediterranean Sea.
