Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has stressed the importance of drawing up mechanisms to promote the role of multi-party development banks and international finance institutions in providing finance for the climate work in line with COP27 summit held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, in November, 2022.

The foreign minister’s statements came during a meeting with Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Simon Stiell in Abu Dhabi Monday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said Shoukry appreciated efforts exerted by the Framework Agreement secretariat during the Sharm conference which, he said, contribute to the success of the international gathering.

For his part, the UN official hailed successes achieved during the Sharm conference despite the difficult international conditions, expressing hope for continuing consultations between the two sides to put into force the Sharm recommendations.

According to Abu Zeid, the foreign minister discussed with Stiell mechanisms of the historic agreement on establishing the loss and damage fund to mitigate the repercussions of the climate change and support efforts to transit towards eco-friendly energy, promote adaptation measures and drum up support for the climate finance.

The UN climate official expressed hope for working with Egypt’s presidency of COP27 to secure smooth transition to the UAE presidency of COP28.
