Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Majid Takht Ravanchi, has affirmed that the solution to the crisis in Syria is linked to ending the occupation in its various forms and eradicating terrorism.

During a meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Syria, Takht-Ravanchi said that the war against terrorism should not be used as a pretext to weaken Syria and undermine its territorial integrity.

“The abolition of the embargo measures against the Syrian people is now more vital than at any other time,” he added, noting that these illegal measures have had catastrophic repercussions on all aspects of citizens’ lives and are in contravention of Resolution 2585 issued by the UN Security Council on early recovery projects.

Iran’s permanent representative to the UN praised the efforts of the Syrian government and humanitarian partners to expand the scope of humanitarian relief operations on an ongoing basis.

He said “We renew here our demand to end the looting of Syrian natural resources, especially oil and agricultural crops, by foreign forces, because this criminal act not only violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and the resolutions issued by the Security Council and the Charter of the United Nations, but also leaves a bad impact on the efforts and measures that are being implemented to revive the Syrian economy.”

Takht-Ravanchi affirmed Iran’s support for initiatives aimed at facilitating the return of Syrian refugees and displaced persons, and its willingness to assist in the success of such efforts.

The Iranian diplomat reiterated that the only way to resolve the crisis in Syria is to adopt a political process led by Syria, directed by it and facilitated by the United Nations, stressing Iran’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence, and its support for Syria’s efforts to combat terrorism.

Takht-Ravanchi condemned the repeated violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria by the Israeli entity.

He said, “We demand the UN Security Council to hold this entity accountable for any aggressive and malicious measures, and for its blatant threats to use force against the countries of the region, which endangers the security and peace of the region.”

He considered that the illegal presence of foreign forces in parts of the Syrian territory has provided ideal conditions for terrorist activities and must end immediately.
