Bogota, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Thursday inscribed the element of the Damascene Rose and associated heritage practices and craftsmanship on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.
During the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in the Colombian capital, Bogota, the Damascene Rose and the heritage practices and craftsmanship associated with the rose entered in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, the UNESCO said on its website.
The rose is grown in al-Mrah village at eastern Qalamoun in Damascus countryside. It begins to bloom in May, when the picking commences and the annual festival kicks off where the farmers handpick the roses and then distill the perfume to make rose syrup, jam and medical materials.
Syrian Trust for Development said on its page on Facebook that the Damascene Rose inscribed to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO as an element of Syrian cultural heritage thanks to the joint efforts of Living Heritage program of the Syrian Trust for Development, in cooperation with people of al-Mrah town and a number of governmental and non-governmental bodies.
