NEW YORK, The UN Security Council plans to vote this weekend on a resolution on the ceasefire already under way in Syria as well
as on peace talks to end the nearly six-year civil war, Russia's UN ambassador says Friday.
Speaking after a closed door council meeting in New York, Vitaly Churkin says Russia had circulated a draft to council members, and after making suggested modifications, hopes to see the resolution come to a vote on Saturday.
Talks planned for the Kazakh capital Astana will not compete with possible talks in Geneva, Churkin says.
"De Mistura had trouble reconvening the talks so Russia and Turkey obviously decided to give the United Nations a hand in pushing things forward," he says.
