WASHINGTON, The US on Friday commended the recently-announced ceasefire in Syria, saying it might be an opportunity for a political resolution to the conflict, which is close to its sixth year.
The ceasefire is a "good thing" towards easing the suffering of the Syrian people, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook told CNN.
It is "perhaps an opportunity for an end to the Syrian civil war, a political resolution," he added in an interview.
Russia and Turkey co-brokered the ceasefire which took effect last midnight between the Syrian regime and several groups.
Cook said it would not have an impact on the global coalition's fight against the so-called Islamic State group in eastern Syria.
"The partner forces that we're working with are showing progress in that fight against ISIL and they'll continue to have our support," he said, using the group's former acronym.
