It’s a perfect day for tennis: slight breeze blowing, the sun shining bright. Regardless of it being quite early on a weekday, fans were arriving at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships to see their favourite players in action.
People had taken time out of their schedules to be here. One such person was Lore Wuerthner who was visiting her daughter, Aileen. Lore lives in Germany and it’s the first time she’s gotten a chance to see the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships live.
She said: “It has been great so far!”
Goran Milovanovic was spotted with his wife Valentina. He said: “Today is my birthday and I’m so glad to be celebrating with these tennis personalities.”
His wife told Gulf News that they’ve been living in Dubai for six years and have been watching the tournament year after year. She hopes that Novak Djokovic will take the Men’s Singles title once again.
The day started off with Alize Cornet playing against Simona Halep. Unfortunately, due to an injury, the latter had to retire from the game.
Before the game began, ball boys and girls were seen walking around the stadium, getting ready to do their job.
Anjana Rajesh was one of them. She said: “I went through 16 weeks of training for this. It’s my first time as a ball girl.”
The 11-year-old says after the training she has become more confident and has learnt the importance of team work and coordination.
Then came the exciting match between Caroline Wozniacki and German Sabine Lisicki. It was a rough start for Wozniacki, the former number one, but the crowd cheered the Danish player till the end. She defeated her opponent 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
As she walked out, fans greeted her with loud cheers and hoped that she would stop just for a second so they could take a quick selfie with her.
As the sun set, the spectators decided to take a break and were seen walking around the Village for an evening snack. The matches continue later in the evening.
