Viewers of the X Factor have been accused of racism by a Hollywood star, who claimed they rarely vote for black singers.
Irish actor Chris O’Dowd, 34, said he was a big fan of the ITV reality show, but accused viewers of discriminating against black contestants by voting them out before the final rounds every year. Two of the X Factor’s ten winners, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, are mixed race while members of the boyband JLS, runners-up to Burke, are black. However, O’Dowd’s comments come after a series of contestants complained they were exposed to racist abuse.
One of the favourites to win in 2013, Hannah Barrett, 17, said she faced a barrage of racist abuse online before she was voted off in the seventh week.
