Akeed records 45 rumors in February

Amman: The Jordanian Media Credibility Monitor “Akeed” said it recorded 45 rumors that circulated through local media and social media platforms during the month of February.

The monitor’s monthly report, which came out on Wednesday, said this month saw 5 rumors more than the 40 recorded in December.

Public affairs topped the list of February rumors with 17, about 37.8 percent of the total number, followed by 13 economic rumors (28.9 percent), 8 security rumors (17.8 percent), 4 political rumors (8.9 percent), and 3 health rumors (6.6 percent).

Forty-two, or 93 percent, of the February rumors originated from local sources, such as social media platforms and news websites, according to the report.

Thirty-four rumors, 76 percent of the total number, originated from local social media, and 11, or 24 percent, came from traditional media outlets, it said.

The monitor urged social network users to refrain from sharing or re-posting any content without a credible source, noting that relying on these sites for news without considering content veracity leads to a great deal of incorrect and inaccurate news, rumors, and misinformation.
