Kuwait urges int’l community to press Israel to adhere to IAEA regulations

VIENNA, Kuwait on Friday called on the international community to pressure Israel into admitting to the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty, and subject all its nuclear facilitates to IAEA safeguarded systems similar to the rest of the countries in the region.

Kuwait’s Ambassador to Austria and permanent representative at the IAEA Talal Al-Fassam, delivered a speech mentioning this topic before the Board of Governors of the Agency during the round of discussions, entitled “Israeli Nuclear Capabilities.” Mentioning that applying the IAEA safeguarded system to all nuclear activities and facilitates in the region is of utmost importance as it has a major impact on the security and stability of the international community.

Ambassador Al-Fassam also mentioned, the resolution adopted annually by the IAEA, “Application of Agency Safeguards in the Middle East”, refers to the urgent needs of all countries in the region to accept the safeguarding application on all nuclear facilities as all states are party to the treaty except Israel.

He also mentioned that unfortunately despite 28 years since the resolution was issued “we still hear arguments that the agency is not the appropriate forum for this issue”, while steps to enable the Agency to apply or establish a zone free of nuclear weapons is continuously rejected.
