In turn, English-language newspaper The Peninsula highlighted the repercussions of the assassination of Palestinian group Hamass political leader Ismail Haniyeh in an apparent Israeli strike in Tehran, indicating that these developments has raised the fears of further escalation and expansion of the conflict in the region. The newspaper said in its editorial titled 'Grave Escalation', that HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip and the repercussions of the killing of Haniyeh, during his meetings yesterday in Doha, with HE UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, HE UK Defense Secretary John Healey, as well as HE Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt Dr. Badr Abdelatty. The State of Qatar called the assassination a heinous crime, a dangerous escalation, and a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law. It said the assassination and reckless targeting of civilians will lead the region into chaos and undermine the chances of peace, the paper added. The Peninsula concluded by stressing that it is time for the international community to act and stop this genocide of the Palestinian people. In the same context, Al-Raya newspaper said in its editorial that Israel gives itself, every time, the right to commit heinous crimes against the defenseless Palestinian people. It persists in its policy of systematic killing, destruction and the abuse of Palestinians, in continuation of the policy of destroying the Palestinian existence within the comprehensive war it is waging. The assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement in Palestine (Hamas) Ismail Haniyeh yesterday in Terhran is an attack on humanity and on all international norms. Yet, Israeli criminality has no limits, especially since this condemned crime will cast its shadow on the negotiating process to stop the aggression on Gaza and release the hostages and prisoners, the paper added. Al-Raya pointed out that the State of Qatar condemned in the strongest terms this brutal crime, and considered it a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law, warning that the assassination and the reckless Israeli behavior in continuously targeting civilians will lead to chaos in the region and undermining the chances of peace. The State of Qatar renews its firm position rejecting violence, terrorism and criminal acts, including political assassinations, regardless of the motives and reasons. In light of the Israeli recklessness, Qatar calls for a firm international stance against anything that would endanger the security and stability of the region. In this context, HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani stressed that regional and international peace needs serious partners and an international stance against escalation and disregard for the lives of the peoples of the region. Commenting on the assassination of Haniyeh, His Excellen cy said that the approach of political assassinations and deliberate escalation against civilians in Gaza at every stage of the negotiations prompts the question of how negotiations can take place in which one party kills the party it is negotiating with. The world knows now which party is obstructing negotiations for a peaceful solution to the crisis in Gaza, Al-Raya concluded. Source: Qatar News Agency
