Gaza: According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), unemployment in Gaza and the West Bank has reached alarming levels, with an average rate of 51.1% over the past 12 months due to ongoing conflict. The ILO's recent findings highlight a significant deterioration in the labor market and economic conditions in the region. According to Emirates News Agency, the unemployment rate in the West Bank stood at 34.9% between early October 2023 and the end of September 2024. In Gaza, the situation was even more dire, with an unemployment rate of 79.7%. This dramatic increase in unemployment rates has been attributed to the extensive and prolonged conflict affecting the area. The economic impact of the war has been severe, with the real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in both Gaza and the West Bank plummeting by an average of 32.2% over the past year. The West Bank experienced a GDP contraction of 21.7%, while in Gaza, the GDP saw an unprecedented decline of 84.7%. This economic downturn surpasses the impact o bserved during the second Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in 2001, when real GDP fell by 14.9%. Furthermore, the report details the devastating poverty levels in Gaza, where nearly 100% of the population now lives in poverty, a stark reflection of the intense hardships faced by residents. The economic decline in the West Bank has also led to a significant increase in the short-term poverty rate, which escalated from 12% in 2023 to 28% by mid-2024. The ILO's findings underscore the profound and widespread effects of the conflict on the economic stability and well-being of the populations in Gaza and the West Bank, indicating a pressing need for international attention and intervention to address these critical issues.
