BAKU: The World Trade Organization (WTO) has unveiled its extensive agenda for the upcoming COP29 Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. Under the leadership of Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the WTO Secretariat plans to engage in a series of trade-focused events and high-level discussions aimed at integrating trade and investment considerations into global climate action strategies. According to Emirates News Agency, the WTO's participation at COP29 will include the involvement of Director-General Okonjo-Iweala in the World Leaders Climate Action Summit scheduled for 12th-13th November. Additionally, the WTO will coordinate several events at the COP29 Trade and Investment House, a venue hosted by Azerbaijan's Ministry of Economy in partnership with the WTO, the International Chamber of Commerce, the International Trade Centre, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The agenda also features the launch of multiple publications by the WTO and its partners, aimed at addressi ng the complex interplay between trade, investment, and environmental sustainability. The Trade and Investment House will provide a platform for interactive discussions, workshops, and exhibitions showcasing innovative solutions in trade and investment that support climate action. A special focus of the WTO's agenda is the Climate Finance, Investment and Trade (FIT) Day, set for 14th November 2024. This event will focus on enhancing climate finance flows and supporting the just transition for developing countries through better-integrated trade and investment policies. The day will also feature discussions on the role of sustainable stock exchanges and the decarbonization of key sectors such as steel and hydrogen. Throughout COP29, the WTO and its partners will emphasize the critical role of trade policies in achieving climate goals and fostering sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on involving small and medium-sized enterprises from developing economies in low-carbon value chains.
